Here is the situation as it stands on Tuesday, May 2, 2023:

Fighting:

The USA White House has estimated that 20,000 Russian soldiers have died in the past five months of fighting.

Russia’s defence ministry has said it carried out overnight missile attacks on Ukrainian military sites, including weapons depots and ammunition factories.

The Ukrainian air force has shot down 15 out of 18 missiles fired across Kyiv and Dnipro in the early hours of Monday, the military said.

Missile attacks on the eastern city of Pavlohrad have killed two people and injured 40, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said. The president said a 14-year-old boy was also killed close to his school when it was hit by a bomb in the Chernihiv region, close to the Russian border.

The US ambassador to Kyiv, Bridget Brink, has condemned Russia’s missile attacks as “barbaric”.

The head of the Wagner Group has appealed to Russia’s defence ministry to increase ammunition shipments to his troops fighting in Bakhmut, Ukraine. In a video posted on his Telegram channel, Yevgeny Prigozhin said he needed at least 300 tonnes of artillery shells a day in his bid to take the city.

General Oleksandr Syrskyi, commander of Ukraine’s ground forces, has said the situation in Bakhmut remained “difficult”, but soldiers had launched a counterattack in some parts of the ruined city.

Ukraine claims Russian drones crashed on Romanian territory

4 September 2023 - Ukraine claimed that at least one Russian attack drone fired overnight on one of its Danube delta ports had crashed across the river on to the territory of Nato-member Romania, marking a potentially serious escalation of Moscow’s full-scale invasion of its neighbour.

Ukraine says it has 'evidence' Russian drones landed inside Nato territory

4 September 2023 - Ukraine said it has evidence that an Iranian-made drone crashed and detonated in Romania in the first case of Russian attacks hitting a Nato country.

The Shahed suicide drone appeared to be aimed at Ukrainian infrastructure on the Danube, one of the only remaining ports carrying exports to the Black Sea.

Romania denied the drone struck its territory, but Ukraine’s foreign minister claimed on Monday that he had proof the weapon crossed the border.

“It’s laughable to deny that they did fall down and say this with authority, with evidence that Shahed drones did get there,” Dmytro Kuleba said.

“We have photographs proving that something did crash there.”

Mr Kuleba said he believed the Romanian government was being cautious not to “escalate” the incident to avoid being caught in an “immediate conflict”.

Romania denies Russian drones detonated on Romanian territory

BUCHAREST, Sept 4 (Reuters) - Romania's Defence Ministry denied reports on Monday that Russian drones fell and detonated on Romanian territory in an overnight attack on Ukrainian port infrastructure on the Danube river, a spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said the ministry would release a statement later on Monday.

Earlier, Ukraine's foreign ministry said the drones had detonated on Romanian territory, which borders Ukraine.

December 1, 2023:

Ukraine’s domestic spy agency has detonated explosives on a Russian railway line deep in Siberia, the second attack this week on military supply routes in the area, a Ukrainian source told Reuters on Friday.

The incidents appear to show Kyiv’s readiness and ability to conduct sabotage attacks deep inside Russia and disrupt Russian logistics far from the front lines of Moscow’s 21-month-old war in Ukraine.

The source, who declined to be identified, said the explosives were detonated as a freight train crossed the Chertov Bridge in Siberia’s Buryatia region, which borders Mongolia and is thousands of kilometres from Ukraine.

KYIV, UKRAINE - Russian forces launched 45 drones over Ukraine Sunday in a five-and-a-half-hour barrage, officials said, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy continued the reshuffle of his war cabinet as the war enters its third year.

In a statement, the Ukrainian air force said it had shot down 40 of the Iranian-made Shahed drones over nine different regions, including on the outskirts of the country's capital, Kyiv.

The five-and-a-half-hour attack targeted agricultural facilities and coastal infrastructure, officials for Ukraine's southern defence forces wrote on Telegram. They said that a strike in the Mykolaiv region had injured one person, sparking a fire and damaging nearby residential buildings.
