MONTREAL, Sept 15 (Reuters) - Air Canada (AC.TO) on Thursday said it would buy electric planes for the first time with the acquisition of 30 battery-powered regional aircraft from Heart Aerospace, as more airlines turn to new technologies to lower emissions and fuel costs.

Global airlines are stepping up plans to tackle climate change as they face mounting pressure from regulators and environmental groups over the impact of billions of extra passengers expected to take to the skies in coming decades.

There are benefits to "electric planes." Electric airplanes could provide the scale of transformation required, and many companies are racing to develop them. Not only would electric propulsion motors eliminate direct carbon emissions, they could indeed reduce fuel costs by up to 90 percent, maintenance by up to 50 percent and noise by nearly 70 percent.

There are some disadvantages to "electric planes." Limitations in battery technology mean electric planes' batteries are still really far less efficient than jet fuel. Aircraft makers have tried to compensate for this inefficiency by indeed creating larger batteries, but those lead to extremely heavy vehicles ill-equipped for long-range travel.

It takes a lot to get electric planes off the ground. The lithium-ion battery is good for moving cars short distances, but aviation requires longer-lasting power. In the future, other elements may be used for more power.

Over the past few years, the battery industry has largely focused on cars. Improvements have been made. This involves lithium ions that move between a cathode composed of a few metal oxides - including nickel, cobalt, manganese, and iron - and an anode made of graphite. This classic recipe works well. Recently, lithium-ion batteries have pushed the range of passenger cars past 400 miles.

However, as the batteries approach the theoretical limit of how much energy they can store, lithium-ion batteries remain well short of what’s required for most aircraft.

Airplanes need batteries that are light but sufficiently powerful.
