March 4, 2024 - Hong Kong-based HGC Global Communications says four of its undersea telecommunications cables beneath the Red Sea have been cut, affecting some 25 percent of traffic.

The company says it is taking steps to mitigate the damage, including rerouting traffic around the globe and distributing other traffic via the 11 still operable cables in the Red Sea.

It’s unclear how Israeli service providers may be affected.

These cables get cut very rarely. The cutting of these cables disrupts much of Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.

This rare incident is unfortunate. Internet service is now damaged.

About 99% of all intercontinental internet traffic goes over submarine cables. Though satellites are a great solution for edge connectivity onto the global internet, especially in locations that don't have easy access to physical infrastructure, they don't represent a significant amount of overall global capacity.

Data may be stored in the “cloud,” but when it comes to sending and receiving data, a lot of that action is actually happening along the depths of the ocean floor. Hidden beneath the waves, these subsea cables account for approximately 95% of international data transmission.

Really 99% of internet traffic is carried by submarine cables (SMCs) and only 1% by satellite links. Satellites typically offer only 1,000 megabits per second and have high latency, which is the time it takes for data to travel between its source and destination.
