British soldiers ‘on the ground’ in Ukraine, says German military leak
https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/gaza-food ... -1.7132121

Mar 02, 2024 - British soldiers are “on the ground” in Ukraine helping Kyiv’s forces fire long-range Storm Shadow missiles, according to a leak in Russian media of a top-secret call involving German air force officers.

The Kremlin said the leak demonstrated the direct involvement of the “collective west” in the war in Ukraine, while former British defence ministers expressed frustration with the German military in response to the revelations.

KUCOVA, Albania, March 4 (Reuters) - NATO member Albania, which has no fighter jets of its own, opened a rebuilt Soviet-era air base to serve NATO aircraft on Monday amid an increased threat from Russia, Prime Minister Edi Rama said.

NATO has spent over 50 million euros ($54.26 million) on the Kucova Air Base to bolster its presence in the region. Airspace in the Adriatic country of Albania, which borders Greece to the south and Montenegro to the north, is protected by Italy and Greece.

Europe Steps in as USA Dithers: Czechia Says More Ammo (to Ukraine) Will Arrive in Weeks
https://www.kyivpost.com/post/28991

March 4, 2024 - The first emergency deliveries of artillery shells bought by EU nations to compensate for the impasse in USA military support to Ukraine that has been stalled in Congress for more than two months may reach the front line “within weeks,” a senior official in Prague said.

Jan Jires, director general for defense policy at the Czech Ministry of Defense, told the Bloomberg news agency that a key group of European states has already agreed to ante-up most of the funding needed to support the $1.5 billion emergency Ukrainian assistance initiative put forward by his government in late February.

Canada, Denmark, and other countries not wishing to be identified have pledged funding, Jires said in March 1 comments. On Feb. 28 Belgium said it would donate $216 million, and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte announced the Netherlands would provide $162 million on Mar. 2, upping the Hague’s previous pledges for artillery ammunition to reach $271 million for the year.

March 1, 2024 - Ukraine’s military is set to receive the first of what may be hundreds of thousands of 155mm artillery shells as part of an international effort to forage foreign stockpiles as US efforts to send more aid remain hung up in Congress.

Ukraine could see the first shells arrive within weeks under the initiative, which has the Czech Republic serving as the middleman to link governments willing to finance the purchase of excess 155mm shells in third countries, Jan Jires, the country’s director general for defense policy and strategy, said in an interview in Washington.

President Volodymyr Zelensky and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte signed a 10-year agreement on security cooperation between Ukraine and the Netherlands in Kharkiv, Zelensky announced on March 1.

"The document includes 2 billion euros in military aid from the Netherlands this year, as well as further defense assistance over the next ten years," Zelensky said.

"It also prioritizes the provision of air defense, artillery, sea, and long-range capabilities, with a particular emphasis on strengthening Ukraine's air force."

Ukrainian MPs pass controversial mobilisation bill to boost troop numbers
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/ ... war-russia

Ukraine’s parliament has passed a mobilisation bill aimed at conscripting hundreds of thousands of reinforcements, after a lengthy and contentious process to determine who next will be pressed into service.

The numbers needed are lower than the 500,000 initially sought, though the exact figure has not been spelled out. Many will be 25- and 26-year-old men, eligible for enforced enlistment for the first time.

A demobilisation clause that would have allowed soldiers to leave the military after 36 months of service was excluded after pressure from Ukrainian commanders concerned about the impact as the war heads towards the three-year mark.

Russian Attacks on Ukraine Stoke Fears Army Near Breaking Point
- Kyiv at most fragile moment in two years of war, officials say
- Risk emerges of Ukraine force collapse, Russian breakthrough
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles ... eakthrough

Russia’s missile attacks on Ukraine’s energy system, the bombardment of its second-largest city and advances along the front are stoking worries that Kyiv’s military effort is nearing breaking point.

A dire shortage of ammunition and manpower along the 1,200-kilometer (930 mile) front and gaps in air defense show that Ukraine is at its most fragile moment in over two years of war, according to Western officials with knowledge of the situation.

Ukraine needs military aid and air defence systems in the face of Russia’s intensifying attacks, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, as he criticised his country’s allies for engaging in “lengthy discussions” and “turning a blind eye”.

The Russian military launched attacks on five regions across Ukraine, killing at least seven people and damaging infrastructure including substations and power generation facilities, Ukrainian officials said on Thursday.

May 17, 2024 - Struggling on Front Lines, Ukraine Strikes Harder at Russian Energy

A huge drone attack targeted southwestern Russia and the Russian-occupied peninsula of Crimea, hitting oil facilities and a substation, leading to rolling blackouts.

Struggling to contain Russian advances on the battlefield, Ukraine is increasingly taking the fight to Russia beyond the front lines in an effort to disrupt its military operations and put pressure on its economy — targeting airfields, logistics hubs and critical energy facilities with missiles and drones.

That strategy was on full display early on Friday when a series of explosions struck fuel depots, oil facilities and a power station in southwestern Russia and Crimea, the Russian-occupied Ukrainian peninsula. Just a day before, Ukrainian missiles hit an airfield in Crimea, destroying at least three jets.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said it had shot down more than 100 Ukrainian drones on Friday, a figure that would represent one of Ukraine’s largest air assaults against Russia in months. A Ukrainian security official said Ukraine was behind the attack.

Although the full extent of the damage was unclear, the Russian authorities reported that an electricity substation was hit in the Crimean city of Sevastopol, leading to rolling blackouts.

China's response called 'very weak' as Russia-North Korea pact threatens Beijing's influence

Read more here:

BEIJING — With no obvious options, China appears to be keeping its distance as Russia and North Korea move closer to each other with a new defense pact that could tilt the balance of power among the three authoritarian states.

Experts say China’s leaders are likely fretting over a potential loss of influence over North Korea after its leader Kim Jong Un and Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the deal this week, and how that could increase instability on the Korean Peninsula.

Russia to assume monthly presidency of UN Security Council

Read more here:
https://www.plenglish.com/news/2024/07/ ... y-council/

United Nations, Jul 1 (Prensa Latina) Russia will assume the presidency of the United Nations Security Council amid heated debates on the end of conflicts in Gaza and Sudan, and the recent terrorist threats in Russia.

Moscow will present its work agenda just a week after its permanent representative at the United Nations, Vassily Nebenzia, denounced the international community’s silence after the Ukrainian attack on a beach in Sevastopol, where four people were killed and more than a hundred injured.

In statements to the press, the diplomat stated that he was not surprised by the silence of the media linked to the West when denouncing the use of US-made weapons during the attack.

“The fact that the United States is directly involved in this crime is beyond any doubts,” added the diplomat, who confirmed the use of ATACMS missiles provided by the US and armed with cluster munitions.

“Washington and its allies foster a neo-Nazi regime in Kiev and encourage their puppets in Kiev to commit terrorist acts against civilians,” he added.

Nebenzia also described the UN statements on events like this as a double standard, and insisted on the lack of a meaningful response when it comes to Russian civilians’ lives.

Why Ukraine’s Kursk offensive has failed to distract Russia from Donbas push
https://www.france24.com/en/europe/2024 ... onbas-push

Russian troops are inching ever close to Ukraine’s eastern city of Pokrovsk, a vital logistical hub for Kyiv’s outgunned and outnumbered forces, leading some analysts to question the wisdom of a Ukrainian lightning offensive on Russian soil that was intended to distract Moscow from its Donbas push.

The Ukrainian army remains in control of more than 1,000 square kilometres of land in Russia’s Kursk region, almost a month into a brazen cross-border incursion that offered Kyiv’s forces a much-needed morale boost – and dealt Russian President Vladimir Putin a humiliating blow.

Along eastern Ukraine’s sprawling front line, however, the Russian army has been notching up territorial gains, cutting deeper towards the city of Pokrovsk in Donetsk province, a crucial supply and reinforcement hub for Ukraine’s frontline troops, and claiming the capture of a nearby village on Wednesday.

Moscow’s troops have moved to within 10 kilometres of the strategic city, the UK’s military intelligence reported on Monday as Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky conceded that the situation on the ground was “difficult”.
