Everything We Know About the Massive Uber Hack

Uber has been hacked and boy does it look bad. The hacker, which boasted of their achievements via Telegram this week, claims to be an 18-year-old who allegedly gained such liberal access to the tech giant’s network that they were able to Slack the Uber workforce and post a picture of a dick on the company’s internal websites.

Uber hasn’t said much about its security debacle yet, aside from Thursday when it admitted that it was experiencing a “cybersecurity incident.” On Friday, the company also posted a brief update in which they claimed that there was “no evidence that the incident involved access to sensitive user data.”

Some think that if Uber Company had a ZTNA approach, this would of most likely prevented the hack.

The Uber Hack’s Devastation Is Just Starting to Reveal Itself

An alleged teen hacker claims to have gained deep access to the company’s systems, but the full picture of the breach is still coming into focus.

Understanding security is difficult.

Zero trust network access (ZTNA), also known as the software-defined perimeter (SDP), is a set of technologies and functionalities that enable secure access to internal applications for remote users. It operates on an adaptive trust model, where trust is never implicit, and access is granted on a need-to-know, least-privileged basis defined by granular policies. ZTNA gives remote users seamless, secure connectivity to private applications without ever placing them on the network or exposing apps to the internet.

The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly of Uber

Broadly, tech stocks didn’t have the best earnings season \but that wasn’t the case exactly for Uber Technologies (UBER). The ride hailing and food/non-food delivery service company crushed revenue projections with $8.34 billion compared to its year-ago revenue of $4.8 billion. The strong revenue growth is an interesting indicator for the current macroeconomic condition with much of the growth coming as people are traveling far more than this time last year.

However, it's not all good for the young company as its inability to record a profit still reared its ugly head despite the strong revenue growth. Uber was expected to report an earnings-per-share (EPS) loss of -$0.17 but missed on those expectations and reported an EPS of -$0.61. Many analysts were surprised at Uber’s revenue beat due to the current difficult market conditions but an earnings miss is far less surprising given that profitability struggles, with increased costs and tighter margins, have been a running theme for a few earnings seasons now.

Interesting: A possible bot driver reality:

For Uber, after dealing with a shortage of drivers earlier in the year, the clearest path to profitability is getting rid of them all together.

Autonomous, self-driving cars are the future (at least according to most sci-fi movies) and represent the clearest way for Uber to massively cut costs as they don’t need to pay robots a salary (unless it’s a living thing and the plot of 2001: A Space Odyssey or The Terminator becomes a reality).

Uber is already working towards a self-driving taxi service with major metropolitan areas such as San Francisco being the first trial runs. As the autonomous driving technology improves, it will massively help a variety of companies but Uber, in particular, could see a massive change in its business model. However, the issue Uber is going to face is that the technology is not moving forward as fast as many expected.
